DOI assignment
A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique and persistent identifier for digital objects such as scientific publications, data sets or other content. It enables reliable citation and retrieval of these objects in the digital space.
The assignment of DOIs for new primary publications (especially dissertations) in hohPublica ensures that they remain accessible in the long term and can be referenced internationally. The DOI ensures that each publication remains uniquely identifiable, even if the storage location or other metadata changes.
The DOIs generated in hohPublica always start with 10.60848/ and are followed by a serial number.
Advantages of DOIs
* Permanent findability: DOIs link directly to the current source, even if the location changes. * Increased visibility: Scholarly works with DOIs are more visible and prioritized in search engines. * Citability: The DOI is a standard in scholarly publications and facilitates the correct citation in bibliographies. * Linkability: DOIs can be linked to other digital resources, e.g. research data.
DOI registration with DataCite
The KIM of the University of Hohenheim is a member of the TIB DOI consortium and registers DOIs from hohPublica at DataCite. The metadata supplied with the publications are under a CC0 license and freely accessible. DataCite DOIs are found in many different citation databases, including:
- OpenAIRE
- Citavi
- DataCite Commons
- BASE
- Clarivate Web of Science
- Google Dataset Search
- Scopus
DOI generation in hohPublica
When starting a new submission via the input mask, a new system-specific DOI is first reserved and displayed directly at the beginning of the mask under the section “Idenifiers”.
All primary publications on hohPublica, i.e. all publications that have not yet been published in exactly the same form on another platform or with another publisher, are automatically assigned a new DOI.
You can take the DOI from the input mask and insert it into your document as a citation reference before uploading the document.
Entering an existing DOI
However, each publication should only receive exactly one DOI so that it can be clearly identified by this. Therefore, for secondary publications, i.e. for all publications that have already appeared on another platform or with another publisher, please check whether the publication has already received a DOI. If this is the case, you can enter it in the input mask further down in the “Formal description” section in the “Identifiers” field.
To do this, please click on the plus sign below the field to enter a new identifier. On the left side, please select the identifier type “URI”. On the right side, please enter the DOI in URL form, i.e. with a leading “https://doi.org/”. Example: “https://doi.org/10.2030/12345”.
Entering the DOI here ensures that no system-generated DOI is created for the publication. You can check this by taking another look at the “Identifiers” section above: after you have saved your entry (or it has been automatically saved), only a so-called “handle” link will now be displayed there. (This is always created in addition as an internal reference link for the entry).
