Publication Animal welfare in non-anthropocentric cost-benefit analysis and social welfare functions: a critical review to guide practical application(2025) Dusel, Sara; Wieck, ChristineCost-benefit analysis and social welfare functions are two closely related methods to evaluate policy impacts. In this critical review, we present the state of knowledge on how to include the animals’ (non-anthropocentric) perspective in these policy evaluations. For this, we synthesize material from the scientific and grey literature and develop a checklist that guides through the process of non-anthropocentric cost-benefit analysis and social welfare functions. Step-by-step, the checklist gives an overview of the alternative options and normative assumptions in the literature and points to remaining research gaps.Publication Exploring private financing for biodiversity conservation: Stakeholder perspectives and governance in the case of wildflower strips in Germany(2024) Bücheler, Hannah; Bieling, Claudia; Feuerbacher, ArndtThis study explores the understudied role of privately financed ecosystem service provision in biodiversity conservation, focusing on the example of wildflower strips in Germany. Using qualitative methods, it investigates the diversity of private financing schemes, stakeholder involvement, scheme implementation and farmers motivations to engage in private schemes. The results draw on literature-based stakeholder analysis and expert interviews, including ecol- ogists and practitioners, in three German federal states: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria and Lower Saxony. Findings include a stakeholder map, the identification of four types of private financing schemes, and the formulation of 17 design criteria covering ecological, economic, and social aspects. These criteria aim to guide providers and sponsors and to emphasise the diverse nature of private wildflower strip financing schemes and their role as crucial links among farmers, the private sector, and society. The study highlights private schemes as viable alternatives to public funding but raises concerns about quality control and coordination with public measures. Combining publicly funded agri-environment schemes with private financing is controversial among stakeholders. Government intervention could formalise the private market, improving control and protection, possibly limiting private sector flexibility and attractiveness due to higher levels of bureaucracy. In any case, transparency in management and financial structures is crucial. Policy recommendations overall include incentivising private sector conservation involvement, offering tax credits for private financing, improving government mechanisms, streamlining coordination of public and private conservation at the landscape level and fostering stakeholder networking. However, when hidden hunger affects a large segment of the population, large-scale implementation is necessary to achieve the desired results. We aimed to identify governance challenges in biofortification, and potential remedies based on a conceptual framework that considers low demand and the invisible nature of micronutrient traits in crops. Methods: Using process net maps and quantitative methods, this paper explores how farmer training can address governance issues. Results: Results show that, in addition to common agricultural marketing issues, sweet potato vine multipliers struggle with vine supply, value chain actors adulterate iron beans, and consumers are hesitant to pay higher prices for biofortified crops. These problems may result from information asymmetry, merit goods, collective action issues, and free riding. Furthermore, training had little impact on reducing the governance challenge arising from information asymmetry. Discussion/conclusion: One of the key solutions was investing in subsidies to increase production and raise awareness of the importance of nutritious foods. The latter, including applications in the construction, textile, chemical, or agricultural sector, is becoming increasingly relevant today. In general, it is hypothesised that biobased products are advantageous in terms of their greenhouse gas (GHG) performance when compared to conventional—in particular fossil—alternatives. To investigate this, the life cycle assessment methodology is typically applied. However, assessments are subject to uncertainty and variability due to assumptions and methodological choices. Given the increasing interest in miscanthus‐derived material applications, this study aims to draw more general conclusions about their GHG performance and relative mitigation potential. This should support a better understanding of their contribution to climate change mitigation objectives and guide the selection of promising products or product groups. A systematic review of peer‐reviewed literature was conducted. In total, 20 studies reporting on 188 comparisons of the GHG performance of miscanthus‐derived and alternative products were assessed. Most comparisons indicated potential GHG mitigation through miscanthus‐derived products, with the majority ranging between 20% and 100% savings. Key parameters defining the relative performance include the selection of the reference product, consideration of soil carbon changes, changes in product and process design, as well as the incorporation of indirect Land Use Change (iLUC) impacts. Overall, we conclude that miscanthus‐derived material applications have the potential to contribute to GHG emission mitigation if iLUC effects are minimised. Given the limited availability of agricultural land, miscanthus‐derived products with high absolute GHG mitigation potential per unit of biomass used and long product lifetime are preferable. For future development, potential environmental trade‐offs need to be monitored.Publication The role of biodiversity in consumer research on food : a review and research agenda(2025) Schneider, Deborah; Osieja, Sanja; Herbes, Carsten; Weinrich, RamonaThe move towards sustainable consumption has drawn significant attention from scholars and practitioners alike. Biodiversity is an integral part of environmental sustainability and food security, but it has received little attention in consumer research. Findings are fragmented into how biodiversity as a product attribute affects consumer food choices. Thus, we conducted a systematic literature review on consumer research on biodiversity in the context of food choice. We reviewed 45 papers published between 2014 and March 2025. Our analysis was guided by the TCCM (Theories, Contexts, Characteristics, and Methodology) framework for developing a systematic literature review. We examined how biodiversity was conceptualized and defined within the studies and towards study participants. Our findings show that biodiversity as a product attribute generally has positive effects on consumer attitude, willingness to pay, and product choice. However, knowledge about biodiversity and the inherent trade-offs in product choices remains limited, so consumers cannot realistically factor biodiversity into their decision-making. We find that research has taken a narrow view of biodiversity, qualitative studies are rare, and few efforts have been made to build theoretical perspectives from empirical data. We conclude with a proposed agenda for future research and a tentative definition of biodiversity for social science.Publication Selective coupling or genuine integration? Startups in the twin transformation(2026) Kuckertz, Andreas; Hinderer, SebastianStartups actively shape innovation during the twin transformation to sustainability and digitalization. Our analysis of >21,000 ventures reveals that genuine twin-transformers, i.e., startups able to integrate digital and green technologies, are rare and primarily driven by software. While sustainable ventures readily adopt digital tools, digital ventures rarely embrace sustainability. This asymmetry reflects different configurations of complementarities between digital and sustainable technologies, which investor preferences reinforce. Eventually, this may lead to superficial coupling rather than deep integration. To address the issue, we offer targeted recommendations for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers aiming to foster scalable, hardware-based solutions critical for sustainability.Publication Sustainability certification in the digital era: a qualitative analysis of sustainability reports across product categories(2026) Boller, Meta Leonie; Grabinger, Toni; Zurwehme, Annikka; Krupitzer, ChristianThe food industry faces growing pressure to align sustainability goals with the rapid advance of digital technologies. This study explores how digitalization supports and transforms sustainability certification practices across diverse food product categories. Novelty lies in examining the interplay between digital technologies and sustainability reporting intensity, offering insights into how firms communicate and operationalize sustainability commitments. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on the sustainability reports of 21 companies using MAXQDA software, assessing the frequency and depth of reporting on sustainability focus topics and digital tools applied. The study includes multiple food product categories, such as coffee and tea, chocolate, grain products, dairy products, beverages, meat and fish, and tropical fruits. Results show that larger firms and those with higher turnover report more frequently and comprehensively on sustainability and digitalization. Three clusters of companies were identified, each reflecting shared sustainability challenges rather than specific product categories. The findings suggest that the relevance of digital technologies is more closely linked to addressing these cross-cutting sustainability challenges, and that high-value product segments provide the most promising starting points for integrating digital technologies into certification processes.
